Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of early maladaptive schemas in the relationship between parenting styles and anxiety symptoms. The research employed a descriptive and correlational method, utilizing structural equation modeling to examine the proposed model. The statistical population consisted of all second-grade high school students in Delijan city during the 2022-2023 academic year. A sample of 550 participants was selected through multi-stage cluster random sampling. Data were collected using the Buri Parental Authority Questionnaire, Young’s Early Maladaptive Schemas (YEMS), and the short form of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) by Lovibond and Lovibond. The results revealed a significant direct relationship between authoritarian parenting styles and early maladaptive schemas (p < .001), as well as between early maladaptive schemas and anxiety symptoms (p < .001). Conversely, authoritative parenting styles showed a significant inverse relationship with maladaptive schemas (p < .001). Model fit analysis confirmed the proposed model’s alignment with the collected data, indicating that early maladaptive schemas fully mediate the relationship between authoritative/authoritarian parenting styles and anxiety symptoms (p < .001). These findings suggest that the nature and quality of parent-child interactions indirectly influence anxiety symptoms through the development of maladaptive schemas. In other words, this study provides further evidence for the critical role of parenting practices in individuals’ mental health. Consequently, enhancing the quality of parent-adolescent relationships and integrating early maladaptive schemas into educational and therapeutic interventions could yield significant benefits.
