The relationship between communication patterns and dependence on virtual space; with the role of mediator of basic psychological needs

Abstract

The aim of the present research was to study the relationship between communication patterns and dependence on virtual space, considering the role of mediator of basic psychological needs. This research was applied in terms of purpose and in terms of descriptive method it was correlation type using structural equation method. The statistical population of the present study included all students of Farhangian University of Khuzestan in the academic year of 2023. Among the statistical population, 360 students were selected through multi-stage cluster sampling method. The research tools included social networking addiction questionnaire (Andresen, 2012), revised family communication patterns questionnaire (Ritchie and Fitzpatrick, 1990), and basic psychological needs scale (Sorbo et al., 2006). The evaluation of the proposed model was done through structural equation modeling and using SPSS and AMOS version 23 software. The results of path analysis showed that family communication patterns had a direct and significant effect on basic psychological needs and dependence on virtual space (P<0.01). The indirect effect of family communication patterns on dependence on virtual space through basic psychological needs was also significant (P<0.01). Therefore, by using an effective communication model in the family, in addition to satisfying the basic psychological needs of teenagers, it is possible to reduce their dependence on virtual space. In the family environment, parents are suggested to adopt strategies based on dialogue and listening in dealing with and communicating with their children, especially teenagers, so that they do not find their desires, needs, or deficiencies elsewhere.
