Student's Help-seeking Behavior in Math Class: The Role of Gender and Developmental Changes

Abstract
The aim of this research was to investigate gender differences and developmental changes on guidance and high school help-seeking behavior of students in math class. Research participants included 346 (boys & girls) guidance and high school students in the City of Ahar in North West Iran in the academic year 2010-11who were selected using multi-stage random cluster sampling. In the present study, help-seeking behavior and achievement- related activities were measured by Habibi and Sarmad questionnaire (1385), and reasons of students for avoidance of help-seeking questionnaire developed by researcher. The data were analyzed using multiple regression and independent T test. The findings revealed that students use more formal help-seeking especially help-seeking from teachers. Also, students with high achievement, and so Female students seek more help from others when needed. The result of regression analysis showed that embarrassment factor predicted avoidance of help-seeking in students. This research has implications for parents and math teachers, who can use these results for math achievement.
